Gurney Bay (Gurney Wharf)

In 2016, it was reported that the coast along Gurney Drive would get a makeover under a massive recreational waterfront project – Gurney Bay.

About 50 acres (20ha) of the 131 acres (53ha) reclaimed area will be turned into a public park complete with public facilities and amenities for the disabled.

The Gurney Bay project is touted as the state’s seafront park-in-the-city project. The entire reclamation project spanning 53ha was completed in September 2019 but the project took a break due to travel restrictions and for the land to settle.

The project will deliver significant new opportunities for Penangites via publicly accessible waterfront promenades plus retail, education, lifestyle and transport amenities.

The construction period of the project is expected to take about three years but the state has also added a conditional one year as the defect liability period until the fourth quarter of 2024.

The Seaside Retail F&B celebrates Penang’s vibrant seafront brought to life by elements such as a waterfronting public promenade, seafront dining facilities including the island’s famed hawker fare and a pier walk.

The Water Gardens area will be defined by lush gardens, ponds and wetlands with its most distinctive feature being landscaped water gardens with innovative storm water filtration systems.

Modelled after Singapore’s success with this at Gardens on the Bay, this is a pioneering system in Malaysia which is aesthetically outstanding as it is functional.

As for the Beach area, Penangites would gain greater access to the waterfront that includes a public beach as well as a public promenade.

Contrasting with the standard solid metal sheet hoarding commonly used by the property and construction industry, TPD has invested in a specially-designed permeable mesh fencing material which enables the public to continue enjoying the sea view and breeze. For aesthetic purposes, planter boxes were attached to the fencing and creepers grown to add greenery to the alignment.
